Building on the success of last year's Wind Weekend, the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) will once again play host to a weekend of performances, workshops and masterclasses as part of the RNCM Wind and Brass Weekend, in association with BASBWE.
Now in its second year, the event will bring together wind players of all ages and all standards to learn from the expert advice of the teaching staff at the college and to hear music of all styles performed by a range of wind ensembles. Following on from the popularity of the wind instrumental masterclasses and clinics in last year's event, this year there will also be specialist sessions for brass instrumentalists, as well as conductors and music educators.
Paul Goodey, Head of RNCM School of Wind, Brass and Percussion says:
"Last year, the College's annual Woodwind Day expanded to a weekend, in partnership with BASBWE. In addition to the masterclasses and concerts that have always taken place during the event, many Wind Orchestras travelled to the College to perform, and work with College staff. This year, we will also be including masterclasses for brass instruments, alongside a wide range of other educational sessions and - as always - there will be an exciting range of performances and trade representation."
A massed performance of two new commissions in the RNCM Concert Hall will open proceedings on both days, and will once again be followed by informal public performances and workshops from visiting community, youth and student wind bands. Participants are encouraged to come and listen to the bands as they perform throughout the weekend, and as RNCM conducting staff Mark Heron and Clark Rundell work with the bands and their conductors in the workshop sessions.
Saturday sees informal workshops and clinics for all ages and abilities, focusing on performance technique, improvisation, conducting and ensemble playing, as well as performances by students from the RNCM School of Wind, Brass and Percussion and an evening concert from the renowned RNCM Wind Orchestra which will include repertoire by Andy Scott, Pete Meechan and Stephen McNeff.
The second day will feature instrumental masterclasses for both woodwind and brass instruments with members of the teaching staff at the RNCM. These classes provide a great opportunity to learn from the very best about woodwind and brass technique and interpretation. Alongside this there will also be a chance for everyone to get involved in a Scratch Wind Band session, working with members of the RNCM Conducting Department on popular wind band and ensemble repertoire, as well as a lunchtime concert from the RNCM Wind Collective that will include a performance of the winning entry in a new BASBWE competition for young composers (see
above for details), Holst's classic Suite in F, and the trombone concerto by Buxton Orr with Peter Moore, 2008 BBC Young Musician Winner as soloist.
The weekend comes to a close with a concert from members of the college's teaching staff and students from the School of Wind, Brass and Percussion, in a range of virtuosic solo and chamber repertoire.
There will be an extensive trade exhibition taking place over the weekend, with instruments, accessories and sheet music on sale. Whether you're looking for a new instrument, or just need to stock up on some new reeds, this will be a great opportunity to see all of the leading wind retailers and manufacturers under one roof.
Full details of the RNCM Wind and Brass Weekend will be available in the RNCM Autumn 2010 Events Guide and on the RNCM website (www.rncm.ac.uk) in July.
